Fluvoxamine has an important drug interaction profile because it can inhibit several liver enzymes involved in medication metabolism. This can increase concentrations of certain other medications, making a complete review of prescription drugs, over the counter medications, and supplements important before treatment.
As with other serotonergic medications, combining fluvoxamine with certain antidepressants or other drugs that substantially increase serotonin activity can increase the risk of serotonin syndrome. Monoamine oxidase inhibitors (MAOIs) require particular caution and should not be combined with fluvoxamine except according to appropriate prescribing guidance.
