Minocycline is a broad spectrum tetracycline class antibiotic used in the treatment of susceptible bacterial infections. It is a semi synthetic derivative of tetracycline and is active against a range of Gram positive and Gram negative organisms. Minocycline is also widely used in dermatology, particularly for inflammatory forms of acne where bacterial activity and inflammation contribute to breakouts.
At the microbiological level, minocycline acts primarily as a bacteriostatic antibiotic, meaning it inhibits bacterial growth rather than directly destroying bacteria. Like other tetracyclines, it interferes with bacterial protein synthesis, preventing susceptible microorganisms from producing proteins required for continued growth and replication.
Minocycline has been used against susceptible bacteria responsible for infections affecting areas including the skin, respiratory tract and urinary tract, as well as selected other bacterial infections when clinically appropriate. Immediate release oral minocycline formulations may also be used alongside other treatments for severe acne.
For acne treatment, minocycline’s antibacterial activity is combined with effects that help reduce the inflammatory lesions associated with acne vulgaris.
