EstroGel is a 0.06% transdermal estradiol gel containing 17β estradiol as estradiol hemihydrate. Estradiol is the principal naturally occurring estrogen produced by the ovaries during the reproductive years and plays an important role in reproductive function, bone metabolism, thermoregulation, and the maintenance of estrogen responsive tissues.
EstroGel is designed for systemic hormone replacement through the skin. Following application, estradiol penetrates the stratum corneum and gradually diffuses through the epidermis and dermis before entering systemic circulation. In Canada, EstroGel is indicated as estrogen replacement therapy for naturally occurring or surgically induced estrogen deficiency associated with menopausal and postmenopausal symptoms, including hot flashes, sleep disturbances, and vaginal atrophy.
Each gram of EstroGel contains 0.6mg of 17β estradiol. The 80g metered dose pump provides approximately 64 metered actuations, with each full pump delivering 1.25g of gel containing approximately 0.75mg of estradiol.
Unlike combined hormone replacement products, EstroGel contains estrogen only and does not contain a progestin. In patients with an intact uterus, estrogen therapy may stimulate the endometrium, so an appropriate progestogen may be prescribed to reduce the risk of endometrial hyperplasia and carcinoma.
