Retin-A Micro contains tretinoin 0.1% w/w, also known as all trans retinoic acid, in a specialized microsphere gel delivery system. Tretinoin belongs to the retinoid family of compounds and is an endogenous metabolite of vitamin A. Retin-A Micro 0.1% is indicated for the topical treatment of acne vulgaris.
Tretinoin primarily affects follicular keratinization and epidermal cell turnover. Acne comedones develop when excess keratin and cohesive skin cells accumulate within follicles. Tretinoin promotes shedding of these cells, increases follicular epithelial turnover, and helps reduce formation of microcomedones, the early lesions from which blackheads, whiteheads, and inflammatory acne can develop.
At the molecular level, tretinoin interacts with nuclear retinoic acid receptors, altering gene expression involved in epidermal cell proliferation and differentiation. Although these receptor mediated effects are established, the complete relationship between tretinoin induced gene expression and its clinical effects on skin remains incompletely understood.
Retin-A Micro differs from conventional tretinoin gels through its MICROSPONGE® microsphere system, which incorporates tretinoin into porous polymer microspheres within an aqueous gel. Canadian product information describes this formulation as designed to provide tretinoin without certain organic solvents found in some traditional formulations; clinical testing also found the 0.1% microsphere formulation less irritating than tretinoin cream 0.1% under the study conditions.
Clinical studies of Retin-A Micro 0.1% demonstrated reductions in both inflammatory and non inflammatory acne lesion counts following 12 weeks of treatment compared with vehicle gel.
