Retin-A Micro contains tretinoin 0.1% w/w, also known as all trans retinoic acid, in a specialized microsphere gel delivery system. Tretinoin belongs to the retinoid family of compounds and is an endogenous metabolite of vitamin A. Retin-A Micro 0.1% is indicated for the topical treatment of acne vulgaris.

Tretinoin primarily affects follicular keratinization and epidermal cell turnover. Acne comedones develop when excess keratin and cohesive skin cells accumulate within follicles. Tretinoin promotes shedding of these cells, increases follicular epithelial turnover, and helps reduce formation of microcomedones, the early lesions from which blackheads, whiteheads, and inflammatory acne can develop.

At the molecular level, tretinoin interacts with nuclear retinoic acid receptors, altering gene expression involved in epidermal cell proliferation and differentiation. Although these receptor mediated effects are established, the complete relationship between tretinoin induced gene expression and its clinical effects on skin remains incompletely understood.

Retin-A Micro differs from conventional tretinoin gels through its MICROSPONGE® microsphere system, which incorporates tretinoin into porous polymer microspheres within an aqueous gel. Canadian product information describes this formulation as designed to provide tretinoin without certain organic solvents found in some traditional formulations; clinical testing also found the 0.1% microsphere formulation less irritating than tretinoin cream 0.1% under the study conditions.

Clinical studies of Retin-A Micro 0.1% demonstrated reductions in both inflammatory and non inflammatory acne lesion counts following 12 weeks of treatment compared with vehicle gel.

This product provides:

  • Strength: 0.1% w/w
  • Format: Microsphere Topical Gel

Topical tretinoin can cause redness, dryness, peeling, burning, stinging, and irritation, especially during the early stages of treatment. Unprotected exposure to sunlight and sunlamps should also be minimized, and sunscreen and protective clothing are recommended when exposure cannot be avoided.

Retin-A Micro should only be applied topically and should be kept away from the eyes, mouth, mucous membranes, and severely irritated or damaged skin. It is a prescription medication and should be used according to the directions of a qualified healthcare professional.

Frequently asked questions

RETIN-A MICRO is a prescription topical retinoid containing tretinoin, also known as all trans retinoic acid. This formulation contains 0.1% w/w tretinoin in a microsphere based aqueous gel. The product is supplied in a 50g pump and contains approximately 1mg of tretinoin per gram of gel.

RETIN-A MICRO is indicated for the topical treatment of acne vulgaris. It is used for acne involving blackheads, whiteheads, and inflammatory lesions such as papules and pustules.

Tretinoin helps normalize abnormal keratinization within hair follicles and increases turnover of follicular epithelial cells. This reduces the buildup of keratin and cellular material that can block pores, helping prevent and clear comedones such as blackheads and whiteheads.

RETIN-A MICRO uses a porous microsphere delivery system known as the MICROSPONGE System. The microspheres incorporate tretinoin into an aqueous gel and are designed to alter how the active ingredient is delivered to the skin. In comparative testing, the 0.1% microsphere formulation produced less irritation than conventional 0.1% tretinoin cream.

RETIN-A MICRO can cause dryness, redness, peeling, burning, stinging, and irritation, particularly during the early stages of treatment. Excessive sunlight and sunlamps should be minimized, and the product should be kept away from the eyes, mouth, mucous membranes, and severely irritated skin. Canadian product information recommends that women who are pregnant or may become pregnant discuss tretinoin use and contraception with their healthcare professional.
